Research suggests that your constituents are more likely to contribute to a cause – and make larger donations – if they know their employer will match their donation amount. Did you know that February is “Matching Gift Month?” While it may not be a federal holiday, it can be a great way to build awareness around matching gifts for your cause. Matching Gift Month can be leveraged to inspire more companies to establish matching gift programs, remind donors of matching gift opportunities, and thank donors and companies for their support. iModules and HEPdata have put together five tips to get you started…

Tip 1: Educate and remind your donors about Matching Gift Month through Facebook

Sample post: “Help us celebrate Matching Gift Month in February! If you work for a company that participates in matching gifts, you can make a personal donation and your company will match it, allowing your donation to have an even bigger impact. Learn more on our website <insert E-Match Donor link>.” (Don’t forget to include a picture with your post.)

Tip 2: Schedule Tweets promoting matching gifts throughout the month of February

Sample tweets:
“Find your perfect match! February is Matching Gift Month. Check to see if your employer matches gifts to OSU: <insert E-Match Donor Link>”
“Double your love to OSU in February! It’s Matching Gift Month. Find out if your employer matches gifts: <insert E-Match Donor Link>”
“It’s the last day of Matching Gift Month. Double or triple your donation’s impact. Search for your employer in OSU’s matching gift database: <insert E-Match Donor Link>”

Tip 3: Add a reminder about matching gifts to your email signature

Sample signature: “Please consider doubling your impact during Matching Gift Month in February. Your donation may be eligible for a matching gift from your employer. Find out when you give to OSU at <insert E-Match Donor Link>.”

Tip 4: Craft an appropriate and targeted email (or two)

Send a special solicitation to your matching-gift-eligible alumni and/or donors letting them know that their employer will help them double their impact to your institution. Send an email to recent year-end donors letting them know that their donations can still be matched if their employer participates in the matching gift program. Love is in the air in February, so there are plenty of good subject lines and headlines to support the “find your match” theme.
