The most overlooked corporate giving program is Dollars for Doers.  Some companies offer corporate volunteer grants, also known as Dollars for Doers programs. These programs allow employees to volunteer for their favorite cause and the employer will match the volunteer hours with a financial donation to the nonprofit. The average rate is $10 per each eligible hour spent volunteering but some companies will match at a higher rate. This is great way for companies to enhance their corporate social responsibility efforts.

How can non-profits take advantage of  these programs?

  • Become familiar with companies in their area that offer Dollars for Doers programs.
  • Build strong relationships with these companies and try and recruit their employees for volunteer projects.
  • Make sure your staff and board clearly understand the benefits of these corporate giving programs.
  • Look to your Board to see if they have connections or affiliations at these companies.
  • Remind volunteers that their volunteer hours might be matched by their employer.

Below are a sample of the most generous Dollars for Doers Programs:

Exxon Mobil

The Volunteer Involvement Program is designed for employees, retirees, and other eligible participants who volunteer in the community on an individual basis. A $500 grant can be awarded to a charitable, nonprofit organization after an eligible participant volunteers at least 20 hours of their time to the organization during a calendar year.

Each eligible participant (employee, retiree, surviving spouse, or director) may apply for four individual grants per calendar year. These grants may be for the same or separate organizations, provided 20 hours of work is performed for each grant. An organization may receive a maximum of $5,000 per calendar year of Individual Volunteer Grants, in addition to the $10,000 maximum for Team Grants.

Verizon

The Volunteer Grant Program provides opportunities for employees who volunteer 50 or more hours in the current calendar year with the same eligible U.S. or international nonprofit organizations, public and private schools and accredited colleges and universities to request a $750 grant from the Verizon Foundation on behalf of that organization or educational institution.

 Microsoft

Microsoft employees must volunteer a minimum of 4.0 hours a year, with a match rate of $25 per hour.  A maximum of $15,000 will matched per year.  Volunteer service must be completed in 12 months.
